INSAIT | Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology.

INSAIT, the new Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology, has just be officially launched in Sofia. This setp-up is a concrete example of the support of Switzerland for excellent R&I collaboration in Europe.

INSAIT is created with an initial endowment by the Bulgarian government of nearly EUR 85M over 10 years, an unprecedented long-term investment in the history of Bulgarian science. It is structured as a special autonomous unit of Sofia University, Bulgaria’s leading university and its core mission is to become the first world-leading scientific institute for computer science and artificial intelligence in Eastern Europe and a research powerhouse in these rapidly expanding technology fields.

Towards this goal, an international agreement was signed in 2021 between INSAIT, the Bulgarian government, and Switzerland’s ETH Zurich and EPFL, also ensuring the EUR 85M. INSAIT is supervised and advised by world-renowned scientists from ETH Zurich, EPFL, IST Austria, MIT, UC Berkeley, Yale, Princeton and the Technion. INSAIT’s initiator and Chair of its Supervisory Board is Prof. Martin Vechev, a leading scientist in the field of computer science and artificial intelligence and Full Professor at ETH Zurich.
